In Russia, woven from willow ponds for fishing, in other words, the grid, called "holui" or "holuyniki". From this word came the name of the village Kholui of Ivanovo region, the birthplace of the famous folk craft — Kholuy painting.
This painting is executed in tempera on papier-mache, and then covered by a multi-layer lacquer. All miniatures are about fifty stages of the production of a fully manual, non-automated work. Each master makes a picture in an individual manner, while maintaining a common recognizable style. All products are characterized by brightness and color purity.
Themes of images vary: Russian folk tales and epics, religious and Christian themes, country life scenes, landscapes and portraits. However, common manufacturing process, the materials and colors used, and high quality form a unique style of Kholuy painting.
